Individual programmes for those diagnosed with a Stroke
The Role of a Physiotherapist at home post Stroke
You will have experienced the benefits of physiotherapy in hospital during the acute stage of stroke. Physiotherapy for mobility aims to optimise movement and mobility on return home, or address any difficulties that may occur with aging.
The main issues addressed with physiotherapy for mobility are:
· An assessment that takes into account known indicators / predictors of recovery post stroke, alongside any communication, cognitive, visual and other difficulties you may have to build an individual goal orientated programme.
· Variety of techniques to facilitate recovery e.g. normal movement, task orientated training, a modified constraint induced approach, strengthening programmes.
· Advice regarding spasticity management.
· Monitoring tools to chart your progress.
· Provide a frame work to manage physical difficulties to build self- efficacy and self esteem.
· An Assessment and loan of a Functional Electrical Stimulator for foot drop.
The programme developed reflects your individual needs and learning style. This is essential as practice is required to optimise neural plastic change (brain reorganisation). The programme can be activity based around your daily routine and /or consist of specific exercises. The frequency you will need a physiotherapist will depend if you wish to be seen regularly or prefer to self-manage.
If you have any suggestions on how you would like the service to develop please contact us.
