Individual programmes for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD)
The Role of a Physiotherapist
This will depend how an individual wishes to manage their PD alongside the drug management of the condition. For more information regarding PD please contact the PD Society.
The main issues addressed with physiotherapy are:
· Walking: addressing muscle shortening + other symptoms contributing to shuffling & freezing
· Balance advice /programmes
· Postural advice / programmes particular for those developing a flexed posture.
· Transfers: particularly sit to stand
· Bed Mobility
· Review physical contributions to pain.
· Thoracic movement and breathing control.
· Specific strengthening programmes.
· An awareness of how emotional and cognitive issues affect activities.
Physiotherapy for Mobility will develop a programme addressing your main difficulties in a way that suits you. This may include a specific exercise programme or advising on activities to be incorporated into your daily routine. Strategies you find successful can be explained to family members / carers if you wish.
If you have any suggestions on how you would like the service to develop please contact us.
