Individual programmes for those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
The Role of a Physiotherapist
This will depend how an individual wishes to manage their multiple sclerosis alongside the type / stage of multiple sclerosis they have. For more information regarding MS please contact the MS Society.
The main issues addressed with physiotherapy are:
· Adapting exercise programmes to optimise activities independently
· Fatigue Management
· Postural advice / programmes particular for those who have to sit / lie for long periods of time or experience spasms
· Monitoring symptoms and providing support only when required.
· Intensive rehabilitation post relapse or a period of being unwell.
· Review physical contributions to pain.
· Management of ataxia, co-ordination and balance difficulties.
· Specific strengthening programmes and the option to trial Functional Electrical Stimulation for foot drop.
As MS develops very differently from one individual to the next, the assessment process reflects this with Physiotherapy for Mobility. The physiotherapy programme developed will depend if you wish to be seen regularly or prefer to self-manage and have infrequent reviews. If you have any suggestions on how you would like the service to develop please contact us.
